Here's exactly what happens when you walk in.

No surprises, no lecture, no judgment about how long it's been. Read this once and you'll know more than most patients walking in for the first time.

What actually happens, step by step

Step 1

Before you arrive (about 5 minutes online).

You fill out a one-page form with your contact info and your insurance. That's it. We don't ask about your history of avoiding the dentist or why you stopped going. We don't need to. We just need to know how to bill you and how to reach you.

Step 2

When you arrive: parking and front door.

Free parking is in our lot behind the building, off [Pearl St / Walnut St — confirm]. Come in the front door on Pearl St. You'll meet Brianna, who runs the front desk. She'll have your paperwork ready.

Step 3

The first 15 minutes: just talking.

You'll sit down with Dr. Chen or Dr. [Second Dentist Last Name] in a regular chair, not the dental chair. They'll ask you what's been on your mind, what you'd like to fix, and whether you'd like to talk about sedation or any extra steps to make you comfortable. Nothing happens to your teeth in this part.

Step 4

The exam itself (about 30 minutes).

We'll take x-rays (digital, low radiation), do a thorough exam, and a cleaning if you're up for it that day. If you'd rather come back for the cleaning, we'll book it for whenever works. The hygienist will tell you what they're doing before they do it. Every time.

Step 5

At the end: a plan, in writing.

Before you leave, you'll get a printed treatment plan (or PDF emailed, your choice) with what we recommend, what each part costs, and what your insurance covers. You take it home. There's no pressure to book anything else today.

If you're nervous, you're in the majority of new patients.

About half the people who book a first visit with us open the call with some version of "I haven't been in years and I'm nervous." We've heard the line so many times it's become the most ordinary thing in our day. You don't have to apologize for it. You don't have to explain it. We will not lecture you about flossing.

If you'd like extra help to get through the first visit:

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Wears off before you leave. Most insurance doesn't cover it; we charge $[X].
  • Oral sedation (a pill before your appointment). You'll need someone to drive you. $[X].
  • A slow first visit. Sometimes the whole answer is just doing the exam in two visits instead of one, with breaks. No extra cost.

"I hadn't been to a dentist in eleven years. They were so kind about it I cried in the parking lot. Going back next month." — Jamie R., Google review, March 2024

Pick a time. You don't have to talk to anyone.
